NILS, a single-seat electric concept vehicle that offers a glimpse into a new form of minimalist mobility is, in his first public appearance at the IAA in Frankfurt still presented this month. The concept car – the dynamic behavior of a sports car, but still runs quiet, and with zero emissions – an aluminum space frame, doors and wheels taken off functions.
The NILS project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development and is designed to be both technically realistic and economically justified.
“NILS the future anticipated. The purpose of the NILS project is technically and economically feasible for a car-concept study, micro-mobility, the individual transport for efficient and environmentally friendly-based transmission making use of electricity restructuring,” said Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg , a member of the Board and Director of Development for the Volkswagen brand.
With a range of 65 kilometers (40 miles) and a top speed of 130 kph (80 mph) NILS was the ideal vehicle for the majority of commuters in Germany. To recover according to the German Federal Statistical Office, 73.9 percent of all commuters between Berlin and Munich to less than 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) on his way to work.
Cars are always the mirror of their time – their styles and technical standards as a result of a certain age – and NILS is no different. It uses anti-pollution electric power transmission to meet the specific needs of commuters. In Germany, for example, about 60 percent of commuting by car, according to the Federal Bureau of Statistics, more than 90 percent of respondents traveling alone. Zero-emission vehicles like this NILS provides frequent travelers a new, environmentally-friendly mobility solutions.
NILS is a compact car that requires very little space on the market. It is only 3.04 meters long – and is about 50 cm shorter than the new Volkswagen up! – Only 0.39 meters high wide from wheel to wheel, and only 1.2 meters.
NILS has the same basic layout as a Formula 1 race car with the driver in the middle, the engine in the back, detached and outboard wheels. The 17-inch alloy wheels with 115/80 (front) and 125/80 (rear) tires optimized for low rolling resistance.
While inspiration can come from Formula 1, has its origins in the styling of the Volkswagen Design Center in Potsdam, Berlin. Ingenlath designer Thomas, Director of the Centre, said: “NILS is designed to make a visual statement and a vision for the future of automotive transportation to the present I am particularly pleased that we succeeded in the concept of two glass doors to. . implement this allowed us to create a large transparent areas and at the same time makes entering and leaving the car very comfortable, even in tight spaces. ”
Because Nils is so compact and lightweight (460 kg), it is very fun to drive. It has a top speed of 130 kilometers per hour and up to 100 kmh in less than 11 seconds faster. This is achieved by an electric motor with a relatively small 15 kW nominal power and the short-term peak power of 25 kW. A lithium-ion battery provides electrical energy. The battery capacity (5.3 kWh) provides coverage of up to 65 km depending on driving conditions. A battery of this size is relatively inexpensive and can be recharged through a conventional 230-volt outlet (2 hours maximum charging time) or at a charging station for electric vehicles. The link is located on the back below the backlight module.
The heart of the electric drive and a lightweight 19 kg with its electrical transmission and battery. Energy management by a high voltage pulse converter, which – together with the 12-volt DC / DC converter for the electrical system and the charger – is an integrated drive. All drive components are housed in a compact aluminum casing on the back of the Nile, driving the rear wheels.
The motor, battery and other components are so compact that there is room for a small but useful boot. The body-colored area above the rear lights swings module suitable space for things like a case of drinks and a bag.
Optimum weight distribution ensures that NILS is the only driver to commute, with zero emissions, but also to have fun while doing it. The slight NILS drives like a go-kart. The control is purely mechanical (low weight does not need power steering), while the electric motor delivers a maximum torque of 130 Nm from standstill with a single-speed gearbox. Suspension is by double wishbones front and rear, while ESP (Electronic Stabilization Program) helps to tame al-exuberance on the part of the driver.
Safety is more important than fun, and Nils is equipped with an automatic distance control system. This uses radar sensors to the room to the front of the car over a distance of about 200 meters and uses brake intervention review to ensure that the distance to vehicles in traffic in front of the car not covered a certain minimum value. The system can even automatically brakes the car is stopped, depending on the situation. Not only are the four disc is used to the electric traction motor and the battery can be used to regenerate the brake inhibit. Last but not least, in front of the Automatic Distance Control Assist system integrates this ever-active system warns the driver if a collision at speeds below 30 kph (18 mph), automatic braking, a collision occur under certain circumstances.
The instrument cluster is a seven-inch TFT screen. The vehicle speed is displayed digitally in the middle, while the energy that is represented by bars. Another graphical display provides information on the driving range. The second most important instrument is a portable multifunction device like the new set of needs you! Portable infotainment devices (PID). It snapped theater-style on the right side of the dashboard. Via touch-screen, the operator functions in terms of navigation, radio, media, telephone, on-board computer – for pre-configuration of the driving range -. “Eco PID calculates the expected driving range, it is not only the route on the map, but the radius and that the goals can be achieved by existing battery.
To save weight and costs, certain functional elements and electrical controls without support. The side mirrors are manually adjusted, for example. The heating and ventilation system is fully electronically controlled, heated seats, and there is. On the right side of the steering column, the engine start-stop switch is the round button for D, N or R. Select uses
The aluminum space frame body is to provide a highly effective security cell. The bodyshell is made from extruded aluminum, cast aluminum and aluminum plate. The roof frame is mounted to the door, a roll bar, the trunk and the bulkhead at the front, consisting of thick aluminum plate. Extruded aluminum is in the rocker panels, used the cross-section and the front and rear vehicle sections. The front and rear body made of aluminum. Parts made from high quality plastic bumpers and trim made on the side.
The frame of the door leaf consists of three main elements: an inner portion, a gain section and a crash outside. When closed they provide optimum crash safety. The door windows are made of lightweight, scratch-resistant, laminated polycarbonate, while the windscreen of laminated safety glass is made.
The headlights are distinctive bi-xenon modules, while the indicator and daytime running lights are white and yellow. In the back of the acrylic glass – integrated into the rear fender and small – the light generated by LEDs, led by transparent semiconductor (suitable for electric vehicle) consume minimal amounts of electricity.
