Making a sequel to Breath of the Wild is an immense task. The Nintendo Switch game was an instant classic and one of the best in the franchise, so following it up is no mean feat. Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom features the same basic graphics and layout, yet has managed to expand upon the original and add a new world of creative possibilities.
The first of these new abilities is Ascend, which allows Link to scale cliffs, walls and other surfaces, but only upwards. Upon reaching the top, Link can then use his glider to travel to other locations. Coupled with this is Recall, a reversal of the Stasis power from BotW, that lets you rewind time and return objects to where they came from. That way, you can use falling rocks like elevators and even send them back at your enemies in an attack!
The fantastically fun Fuse ability also allows you to combine pretty much any item – from plants to weapons – with unexpected results. You can fuse items on the ground in the middle of a fight, making for great resourcefulness in battle. Meanwhile, utility combos like combining a light-emitting plant to an arrow create a moody feel to the game more akin to Dark Souls. Fusing two items also increases the durability and strength of the base items, incentivizing you to experiment with different combinations.
Players can create machines with materials found in Ultrahand’s world, allowing for near-endless possibilities.By using special Zonai devices like fans, rockets, and batteries, you can fly around the world like Aladdin on a carpet. Although the controls may take some getting used to, an easier alternative is available.
Link has the new opportunity to explore different creative possibilities with his abilities in Tears of the Kingdom. The game has the same engine, map and mechanics as its predecessor, but with building and fusing elements, it could be the Majora’s Mask to Breath of the Wild’s Ocarina of Time.
